VOLUNTEERING...THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE
Who can
volunteer?
If you have time to spare and enjoy helping others, then volunteering is
for you!
JFK Medical Center’s Volunteer Program welcomes men and women of all ages.
Volunteers are male, female, retired, employed, students, local residents,
or individuals from surrounding communities. These uncommon people have one
common purpose—they are dedicated to helping others.
Volunteers need no special training to get involved. Every person who is
interested is interviewed. Special talents and personal schedules are
matched to the hospital’s needs. Most volunteers donate one time slot per
week of approximately four hours, however, additional hours are always
welcome.
Volunteerism offers something for everyone who wants to make their spare
time special. To become a volunteer, or for further information, please call
JFK Medical Center’s Volunteer Program at (732) 321-7083.
What are the
benefits of volunteering?
While volunteers offer their services free of charge to JFK, they do
receive many benefits. They have a chance to learn new skills while making
new friends and developing new interests. Younger volunteers use the
opportunity to do some career exploration, and they realize the benefits of
having a background in volunteer service when they make application for
further education or employment. Research also indicates that people who
volunteer live longer. Most of all, volunteers receive the satisfaction that
comes from being needed and doing something worthwhile that helps others.
What
services do volunteers provide?
Volunteers are a vital part of our health care team. Each year they
donate thousands of hours to the hospital to provide services that will
benefit our patients and help make their stay more comfortable. We need your
help not only to continue our current activities but also to extend services
to meet the changing needs of our new health care environment.
Our income generating services provide funds to the JFK Auxiliary to assist
in their support of the hospital chaplaincy program, the purchase of needed
equipment, and educational scholarships for people going into health care
professions.
Becoming an active member of the JFK Auxiliary is another way to perform
volunteer service. We’re currently looking for volunteer assistance in:
• Family waiting areas—you’ll talk with families of patients who are having
surgery or outpatient procedures or who are in intensive care units.
• Greeter program—Initial patient, family, customer directional assistance
and escort service.
• Gift shop—Retail shop with proceeds supporting hospital programs and
services.
Other
opportunities:
Varied areas of assignment are available based on individual interest
and hospital needs. You may help with baby photos or in patient care units,
provide office and departmental support, offer cosmetology help, provide
prayer support, work with the LIFELINE emergency response team or help in
our rehabilitation services or emergency departments.
